I've lost count of how many times this comes up over coffee or in a forum thread. Someone asks whether to buy a quartz or mechanical watch, and within minutes the conversation splits into two camps: the romantics defending the soul of a hand-wound movement and the pragmatists pointing out that a ten-dollar Casio keeps better time than a five-thousand-dollar Swiss automatic. Both sides are right. Neither side is entirely honest.
I wear watches in the field. I've strapped them to my wrist through red dust, saltwater, river crossings, and enough vehicle vibration to shake fillings loose. So when I think about this question, I'm not approaching it from a collector's perspective. I'm coming at it from the perspective of someone who actually needs a watch to work.

Here's what nobody says plainly: quartz wins on almost every measurable metric. A Swiss quartz movement maintains accuracy to within around 20 seconds per month, while a mechanical automatic typically drifts anywhere from 150 to 450 seconds in the same period. That's not a small gap. Out in the field, that's the difference between catching the tide and missing it, between hitting a trailhead before dark or after. Quartz movements are also simpler in construction, which makes them more shock-resistant and generally more durable day to day.
And yet here I am, sometimes choosing to strap on a mechanical watch instead.
There's a reason for that, and it's not sentiment dressed up as logic. It's a genuine acknowledgment that we ask different things from watches depending on what we're doing and who we are when we do it.
The case for quartz is essentially undefeatable if you treat a watch purely as a tool. Quartz ownership tends toward minimal drama. You set it, wear it, and get on with the day. For expedition use, remote work, or any situation where accuracy actually matters, and you can't afford distraction, quartz is the honest answer. Modern quartz movements now include end-of-life battery indicators, so the old fear of your watch dying without warning is largely a thing of the past. The battery doesn't die on you in the field the way people imagine. You know it's coming weeks in advance.

The mechanical argument is harder to make on paper, which is probably why people default to words like "soul" and "heritage" when they try to make it. But there's something more concrete underneath those words. A mechanical watch can last multiple generations if it's properly maintained. A quality mechanical movement, serviced at the right intervals, has a theoretical lifespan that outlasts the wearer. That's nothing. It changes the relationship you have with the object. You're not buying a consumable. You're entering into something longer.
There's also the question of what happens to each movement under real stress. Excessive shock to a mechanical movement tends to end badly, often in a broken balance staff, while the same shock to a quartz might rattle a battery loose or damage the circuit board, but that's a much cheaper and simpler fix. In a genuinely rough environment, quartz absorbs punishment more gracefully and costs less to recover from when it doesn't.
So where does that leave us?
If you're buying one watch that has to do everything, quartz is the rational choice. It's accurate, durable, low maintenance, and honest about what it is. Quartz movements account for roughly 80 percent of the global watch market for exactly this reason: they work reliably, and they don't ask much of you.
If you're buying a watch because the object itself means something to you, because you want to carry something with actual mechanical life on your wrist, a well-made automatic earns its place. Not because it outperforms quartz. It doesn't. But because performance isn't always the point.
I've made peace with owning both. The quartz comes out when I need to know the time accurately and without fuss. The mechanical comes out when the day calls for something more considered, when I want the quiet reminder that not everything has to be optimized to be worth wearing.
The movement question has an honest answer: decide what you're actually asking the watch to do before deciding what's powering it. Everything else is noise.
